9/26 Biology update and homework due 10/3

Hi folks,

Today we did a whirlwind tour of basic chemistry in order to get everyone ready for the upcoming "Basic Molecules of Biology" block of class.  Here's the link to my favorite (yes, I'm geeky enough to have a favorite) periodic table website.

Homework due 10/3 is to;

Read the book pgs. 31- 34

Do Section I Review on pg. 34 #'s 1-6 and 8.

Answer the following questions:
(I've included the answers below so that you can check your work.  Be sure you understand these, quizzes are coming.)

1. Draw the probable bonds for the following elements:
a.  O      b.   C      c.  I       d.  Tl      e. Al      f.  Mg

2.  Name an element that has:
a. 3 valence electrons

b. 1 valence electron

c. 8 valence electrons

3.  Draw the following molecules (use as many atoms as you need to make the bonds)

a. Li & Br

b. Mg & Te

c. K & P

d. O & O

e. N & N

f. C & O

g. C & H

h. C & O & H

Answers (no peeking until your done!)
1. Hard to draw with email so I'll just give #.  a.  2  b.  4  c.  1  d. 3.  e. 3    f.  2

2.  a.  Boron or anything under it, or Nitrogen and anything under it.
b. Hydrogen or anything under it, or Florine and anything under it.
c. Neon and anything under it.

a.  Li-Br
b. Mg=Te
c. P with 3 K's around it
d. O=O
e. N triple bond N
f. O=C=O
g. Many ways but the simplest is C with 4 H's around it
h.  Many ways but one is C=O and put 2 more H's around the C

9/20 Biology update and homework due 9/27

Hi folks,

Today we worked a bit more on understanding what science is and how it works. Most of today was focused on getting the learning what variables are and how to manage them in an experiment.

Homework this week is to:
Read pp. 13 - 24 in the Modern Biology book.
Do questions 2, 3, 19, 28, 29 on pg. 26
Do questions 5 and 7 on pg. 27

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the fun class on Friday!
I just wanted to let you know that I tried the blog link but it didn't seem to work. Brought me to a newly composed email with the email address:

Am I doing something wrong? Or is that not the right link?

Thanks again!
All the best,
Celia Donnelly

Hi everyone,

It's great to get started!  Looks like we should have a good group of folks and an excellent class.

Today we took some time to give a brief overview about what science is, what does it mean, and how does it work.

Here is the link to the blog.  All emails, updates, class recordings, homework assignments, etc. go here.  It's a nice easy way to keep up with what's going on with class or to catch up if you've missed something.

Here's the link to the recording for this week.

See you all next week!
