10/24 Biology update and homework due 10/31

Hi folks,

Today we spent time going over the functional groups and 2 of the 4 major biological molecules.  What they are and what they do.  Next week we'll take a careful look at what they look like.

Homework for this week is to:
Read pp. 51 - 61
Do questions 1-7 on pg. 54
Do questions 1-7 on pg. 60

10/17 Biology update and homework due 10/24

Hi folks,

Today in biology we did a bit more work with solubility as well as introducing the concept of acids and bases.  We also did a brief lab in order to get the hang of using litmus paper and pH.

For homework this week:

Read 42 - 44
Answer questions on:
pg 37 #'s 1-5
pg 44 #'s 1-6

Using the interwebs, or your knowledge from the lab, name 3 household items (things actually in your house right now) that are acids and 3 that are bases.

Revision in homework due 10/17

Hi folks,

I made a mistake and assigned several questions this week that I assigned last week as well.

So for homework this week take about 10 minutes to watch this video about water from Crash Course Chemistry.

Answer the following questions.

1. What kind of bonds does a water molecule have?

2. Which side of the water molecule is positive and which is negative?

3. What does Hank say is the most important thing about water??  (He says you should put this in capital letters.)

4. What is the definition of cohesion?

5. What is the definition of adhesion?

6. What is capillary action?

7. What is the definition of solvent?

8. What is the definition of solute?

9. What is meant by the fact that water has a high heat capacity and why is that important?

10/10 Bio update and homework due 10/17

Hi folks,

Today we did a bit more work with the wonderful substance that is water and we also got into some more general concepts such as cohesive, adhesive, and solutions. We did a quick lab taking a look at the solubility of salt and sugar in water.

For homework next week:

Do Review Questions on Pg. 46 #'s 9-17
And do Critical Thinking questions on page 46 #'s 22 and 23

10/3 biology update and homework due 10/10

Hi folks,

Today we did a bit more work with the basic chemistry needed for biology and then we moved on to one of the most amazing substances in the universe, water. We'll do a bit more on this next week as well.

Homework for this week is to:
Read pgs. 35 - 42 (Up to "Solutions")

Do 5-14 and 22 on page 46

Answer the following questions:

1. Name 2 elements that would probably form an ionic bond. (Hint: Metal and non-metal)

2. Name 2 elements that would probably form a covalent bond. (Hint: two non-metals)

3. What is the difference between heat and temperature?

4. Which has more energy, a hot cup of coffee or a cold cup of water?

5. What is heat capacity and what does it have to do with the aluminum foil on top of a lasagna?
